"I was physically and mentally braced for whatever death brings. Then I began to think rationally, and gained control of the thought process. If he intended to kill me, would he do it in a public place?"

The reader is taken inside a federal agent's undercover world, and witnesses a life-and-death race against time to prevent a contract killing. His mission is to hunt down a paid assassin - only to find that he himself is hired as the killer. He encounters the New Orleans mafia, cop killers, bank robbers, gamblers, race fixers, and eventually, Interpol. He struggles to maintain his own moral compass; and at one point prays silently as a killer presses a sawed-off shotgun to his head. The story exposes the underworld of the Cajun French. The characters and events are based on an extraordinary, hard-hitting, true crime story.

"Palumbo’s harrowing undercover work raised goose bumps on my arms. He proves the old adage that Sicilians make the best criminals and the best cops as he takes us step-by-step through murder-for-hire in the corruption capital of the world – Louisiana."

-- O'Neil De Noux, Shamus and Derringer award winning author of ten crime novels, including JOHN RAVEN BEAU, CRESCENT CITY KILLS, and the epic of love and war, BATTLE KISS. His short stories have appeared in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine.

Assassin Hunter A True Crime Story eBook August Palumbo

I absolutely loved this book. Palumbo is an excellent writer. I felt as though I was sitting next to him, sharing his fears, anxieties, confidence. I also read several reviews from United Kingdom readers on Amazon, U.K. Here are some of their reviews:

This true crime story is a lock-jaw thriller. There are passages in this true crime story that are bone-biters. Palumbo puts you in the passenger sit, next to the cool protagonist. You feel the tension, you smell the perspiration, you see the drama. You're life feels threatened with his.

I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The agent next door 21 April 2012
By S. Phillips - Published on Amazon.com

This is, at times, a surprisingly intimate account of an agent's undercover assignment in the Acadiana region of Louisiana in the 1970s. Thoroughly detailed in both its character and locale descriptions, one cannot help but feel and see what the author experienced long ago. One particular instance may be a little too descriptive. (If this is ever developed into a screenplay, I'm certain Tabasco will pay a bundle to exclude that part of the book.)

The first person narrative is engrossing - at times, even a bit disorienting, when you discover exactly how long Agent Palumbo was "under". I do not intend that as a negative critique. Quite the opposite. In fact, I found this feature of the narrative - actual dates elided out, sometimes only alluded to - satisfying throughout, and that left this reader not quite clearly knowing what date it was and how long Agent Palumbo had been at work until the end. Obviously, a more careful reading on my part would have elicited this information, but a more thorough timeline would have made the novel read more like an after action report.

The unfortunate, though not unexpected, toll that this takes on him and his young family is heart-wrenching and, to this reader's eye, the book appears to be partially an "apologia pro vita sua". Very few individuals are cut out for this type of life, and given what the risks and costs are for such decisions, we should be grateful that, when called to serve, Agent Palumbo answered.

First a disclaimer: I know Gus, but not well enough to write a 5 star review if the book was undeserving. Assassin Hunter definitely deserves it. The book begins with a slightly rough prologue, but as soon as Gus moves into the first person at the beginning of Chapter 1, things improve dramatically. The reader is taken to places previously visited in other novels such presidential protection details, Acadiana, horse racing, the mafia, and undercover work, but this book has the detail that lets the reader know the author has either done painstaking research or else lived in some of the worlds depicted.

This book reads like early James Lee Burke or even Elmore Leonard. I think anyone that enjoys stories about crime, police, secret agents, the underworld, or just a good fast-moving tale will enjoy this one.

Not only was author Palumbo a highly successful ATF special agent, including performing heroically as an undercover agent, but the man can write! He brings the events of forty years ago to life with attention to detail of setting, characterization, and dialogue. Since there are almost two score favorable reviews here already, I'll just add mine as a vote of praise. Truth may not be stranger than fiction, but in the hands of a skilled writer it can be as compelling...or more so.

Congratulations, Mr. P., and thanks for your service.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read but what happened afterwards? 17 Oct. 2013

I've been reading a lot of true crime recently and picked this up on my Kindle after seeing Amazon recommend it to me. I read it in one sitting, just under 4 hours, like much of what the other reviews have stated, I did not want to put it down. I'm going to knock a star off of this book because it didn't have a summary at the end explaining what happened afterwards. Most true crime books I've read always follow you up on the details of the person in prison, psych ward, etc. In my frustration, I turned to Google to find out their fates, unfortunately, no real search results came up for any of the book's main 'bad guy' characters. I realize this is set in the far past, but you would think at least something would come up with a name search. At any rate, great read and looking forward to more from him.

This is great read! Palumbo has both first-hand knowledge and a flair for writing crisp yet detailed prose. He brings you deep inside the action, making use of all 5 senses to keep you on the edge of your seat. He’s also got a great sense of humor, which helps lighten things up through some pretty dark scenes so you can catch your breath. Highly recommended.
